Outline for the Sacrament of Baptism for Adults
At this time I would like to invite forward _____________.
… Hear the words of our Lord Jesus Christ: "All authority in heaven and earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age." Obeying the word of our Lord Jesus, and sure of His presence with us, we baptize those whom He has called to be His own.
_____________, in presenting yourself for baptism, you announce your faith in Jesus Christ, and show that you want to know, love and serve Him as His chosen disciple. Show your purpose by answering these questions: Pastor: Who is your Lord and Savior?
Baptism Candidate: JESUS CHRIST IS MY LORD & SAVIOR.
Pastor: Do you trust in Him?
Baptism Candidate: I DO.
Pastor: Will you be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, obeying his word and showing his love?
Baptism Candidate: I WILL.
Pastor: Do you promise to seek the fellowship of the church wherever you may be and to support the ministry and mission of the church as God calls you?
Baptism Candidate: I DO.
~ Let the congregation stand. ~
Pastor: Do you, the members of this congregation, in the name of the whole church of Christ, promise to welcome _____________ as s/he joins our church and encourage her/him to grow as a disciple of Jesus Christ?
CONGREGATION: WE DO.
Pastor: Will you endeavor, by your example and fellowship, to strengthen her/his family ties with the household of God?
CONGREGATION: WE WILL.
Pastor: Then with one voice, let us say what we believe, using the Apostles’ Creed, a statement of faith affirmed by Christians around the world over the centuries: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic Church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
~ Congregation is seated. ~
